Xavier Iglesias, CNU, DPZ CoDesign, Miami, Florida

What It’s About:
This session highlights a mix of creative multi-unit solutions to bridge the gap in scale and density between single-family and multifamily, and brings together two current trends in home building and urban planning circles—the “missing-middle” and “pocket neighborhoods.” These small residential ensembles are more than the sum of their parts; they are unique examples of infill developments where small units and shared amenity spaces add value to both the new dwellings and existing nearby properties. Intricately combining and connecting townhouses, bungalows, courtyard homes and multi-plex units around landscaped enclosures, these communities go beyond providing housing and contribute to a more walkable, social context.

What You’ll Learn:
– Learn the application of urban design techniques to compact housing solutions.
– Understand the power of multi-unit development strategies to help navigate the often-contentious transitions from single-family to higher densities.
– Explore the adaptability of these pocket techniques to creatively address a wide range of market segments—from the cost-conscious to the affluent empty nest and second home buyer.
– Learn ways to rethink the concept of multifamily amenity features and spaces.

Smita Anand – Designing for the 55+ Buyer

Event Type: Presentation

Smita Anand, AIA, KTGY Architecture + Planning, Washington, DC

What It’s About:
Every market segment has a different list of “wants” and “must haves” when buying a home—that’s not news. What makes a project team a success is the ability to respond to these wants and needs as they change: a new floor plan becomes conventional, a new technology is mainstream and expected, and buyers continue to become more involved and educated in the home building and buying process. Smita Anand, principal at KTGY, will focus on one of the largest market segments, the 55+ buyer, and provide design guidance to “wow!” them.

Through site layouts, floor plans, features and materials, successful built-projects and more, you’ll walk away with take-home 55+ tips to help you meet the needs of this market and stay ahead of the curve in 2019.
