Monroe Street Market in Washington, D.C. has been selected as the Multifamily Community of the Year in the 2015 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

The development was designed by KTGY Group, Inc. of Tysons Corner, Va, and built by Bozzuto Construction Company of Greenbelt, Md. The team also included interior designer RD Jones and Associates of Chevy Chase, Md., and land planner Torti Gallas of Silver Spring, Md.

The project transforms a portion of The Catholic University of America’s South Campus and addresses a market need by creating unique student and family housing, while adding more retail spaces to the area. Residents can choose between three housing options in varying price ranges, and benefit from the pedestrian-friendly atmosphere and convenient public transit.

Developers sought to encourage a strong connection to the arts by providing studios and workspaces where artists can create, display and sell their wares. A total of 27 work studios are available, featuring spacious layouts with high ceilings and glass garage doors to let in ample natural light.

BALA judges said the mix of building styles is contextual with the surrounding area, further enhancing a strong sense of community.

In its 32nd year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international. Award winners were announced at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.

Additional Information about the BALA program can be found at www.nahb.org/BALA, including the 2015 BALA Portfolio, featuring a review of design trends and project photographs.
