REDWOOD CITY, CA—National architecture and planning firm KTGY and SummerHill Apartment Communities, a division of SummerHill Housing Group and a leader in providing quality, smart growth, multi-family rental housing and mixed-use developments, have completed “The Lane on the Boulevard,” a new 141-unit luxury residential rental community in Redwood City, CA. As GlobeSt.com reported in March of 2013, the Lane on the Boulevard is a 141-unit architecturally distinctive apartment community here on the San Francisco Peninsula, just north of Atherton.

The completion celebration will officially be held on Wednesday, November 19th. The property is located on 2580 El Camino Real in Redwood City, CA, between Carlos Avenue and Center Street. Close by are jobs, restaurants, shopping, public transportation and freeways.

KTGY principal David Senden exclusively tells GlobeSt.com that “El Camino Real has been a focus for development for many Peninsula cities and KTGY is happy to be part of several developments shaping this historic street. This project really exemplifies the goals of the Grand Boulevard Initiative.”

The Grand Boulevard Initiative, Senden says, is “a regional collaboration dedicated to the revitalization of the El Camino Corridor as it runs through San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.”

He adds that “The new architecturally distinctive apartment community serves as the catalyst for change on El Camino Real and is a link between downtown Redwood City and other peninsula downtowns.”

KTGY’s Jessica Musick, the lead designer of the project, tells GlobeSt.com that “Residents will enjoy this exceptionally-designed community as well as a convenient lifestyle in this service-rich location.”

Situated on the site of the former Mel’s Bowl, the community name of The Lane on the Boulevard is a “nod” to the site’s past. The bowling alley’s iconic sign, which represents mid-century “Googie” architecture, influenced by car culture and the space and atomic ages, was restored by SummerHill and relocated. The sign now sits on the Redwood City Car Wash site two miles down the road. To memorialize Mel’s Bowl, and the Boicelli Family who owned the land for over 100 years, SummerHill created two plaques that have been placed on the exterior of the building near the apartment community’s main entrance. Photos of the Boicelli Family are displayed in The Lane’s lobby.

The Lane includes a mix of studios and one- and two-bedroom luxury apartment homes ranging from 512 to 1,032 square feet. The apartment homes are energy- and water-efficient and include a gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances and European-style cabinetry, in-unit washers and dryers, walk-in closets, private storage and balconies or patios. The Lane community includes alternative transportation amenities such as bicycle storage and repair facilities, electric vehicle charging stations and a resident carpool web portal. Other amenities include a clubroom, fitness studio, swimming pool with a spa, outdoor kitchen and fireplace, and a pedestrian path surrounding the property. Residents can also enjoy convenient access to their residences via same-level parking.

The Lane has attracted primarily tech workers in this job rich area as well as those in biotech, construction and luxury retail. A number of Facebook employees have already leased apartments, the firm says.

Last month, SummerHill Apartment Communities broke ground on the Villas on the Boulevard, as reported by GlobeSt.com, a new KTGY-designed 186-unit luxury residential rental community in Santa Clara, CA, also on El Camino Real. The Santa Clara development project is the result of a complex assemblage of six parcels and more than a dozen property owners, Senden said.
