Campus Edge creates a dynamic presence along Figueroa Street in Los Angelos, California by stepping the massing, undulating the facade, and using a variety of metal panel sizes. Behind the stepped massing, the stair tower presents itself as a glowing beacon of activity and circulation. A roof deck completes the top floor, offering views of the USC campus and the greater Exposition Park, while stepping down the massing towards the “hub” to the north, allowing the building to respect its immediate neighbors and context.
The designers simplified the language and massing facing the freeway, while creating movement with projecting metal panel angled bay windows, which look directly north towards downtown. The materials were chosen to be simple, yet dramatic in their opposition of each other. The undulating metal panel’s soft blue-gray tone complements the surrounding structures at Exposition Park, while white and black stucco create balance in the building’s facade. Variation in design and movement arises at key moments where the metal panel expresses itself and in the window patterning along the larger stucco masses.
Community amenities include a second-floor deck with unobstructed views of downtown while overlooking the freeway, an internal courtyard with outdoor study pods, a pool courtyard with adjacent fitness and club rooms, and two open space courtyards with various spaces for gathering, social interaction and study.
