With a desire to integrate an established structure with new residential wings, designers reimagined the historic building into the primary indoor amenity and placed the outdoor amenity on a newly established roof terrace, making this the heart of the development. This approach establishes a clear entry for the new development. The overall aesthetic leans into the mid-century modern expression of the historic structure through the use of curving lines. The buildings massing is pushed out towards Michigan Avenue, pulling away and stepping down from the historical building and honoring the existing townhomes along the northern edge. By integrating mixed-use components connections to the community and a natural pedestrian buffer is created. The design is further refined through the use of color and texture which serves to emphasize variation on the urban block and highlight the presence of the historical building.
