KTGY imagined the new-build, 12-story tall Renaissance Milwaukee West with fashion in mind, establishing a “Tailor and Seamstress” concept that would guide all design decisions. An admiring nod to the dedication and passion of the trades and the contrast between masculine and feminine, this conceptual vision gave way to a distinctive style that is elevated, timeless, and sophisticated, with an unexpected sense of discovery for guests of the Renaissance Milwaukee West.
Expressing the unique qualities of their craftsmanship and tradition, the tailor influences the masculine forms of the hotel’s architecture, and the seamstress brings in beautiful feminine design details. The two sides embody the idea of reflecting on the past while coming together to create a dynamic future. In the lobby and public spaces, the designers focused on retail aspects of the fashion trade as inspiration. Visual lines throughout emphasize the art of garment construction and the stitching and weaving of textiles inform the fabrics.
In the guestrooms, the high fashion concept shifts backstage, with cues taken from the environment of a garment-making workroom. From the warm wood and black metal creating a workroom-style desk and the tufted headboard inspired by a pincushion, to the terrazzo night stands as modern interpretations of spools of thread, thoughtful details – from subtle to overt – are layered in for guests to recognize and enjoy.
