The boutique, 4-story Granada Hotel & Spa featuring 60 guest rooms and many amenities is due to be finished in the summer of 2021.

MORGAN HILL, CA — The ground has been broken on the Granada Hotel & Spa, a new four-story, contemporary, boutique hotel with 60 guest rooms situated in the heart of downtown Morgan Hill.

The hotel would be the first hotel to open in the downtown neighborhood, its award-winning Los Angeles-based design firm KTGY Architecture + Planning reported Monday. It’s set to open at 17490 Monterey Road in the summer of 2021.

Morgan Hill City Manager Christina Turner mentioned the project underwent a bit of a “rain delay” but expressed enthusiasm about the hotel as an ideal “anchor for downtown.”

Turner sounded grateful about developers now filling in where city redevelopment agencies once invested before the state shut them down. In about the last five years, about $130 million has been placed in the growth of Morgan Hill. Among them is the Granada.

“I think what’s nice about this project is all the amenities,” she told Patch.

The new, mixed-use destination hotel and spa will feature many amenities such as a restaurant, vintage wine bar, flower shop, banquet hall, spa facility, fitness center, pool and valet service.

These amenities are not exclusive to visitors. And the contemporary design is expected to be a draw.

“The architectural design thoughtfully marries traditional with modern and incorporates vintage brick veneer, wood, steel, and other materials that reference the local palate and setting,” said Sean Martino, KTGY’s Los Angeles office director. “A special design element is the Krion façade system with translucent panels and integrated lighting, which will create a dynamic façade at the corner of Monterey Road and East 1st Street.”

A large kitchen on the ground level will serve the restaurant, wine bar and market area, which will be open to the public as well as hotel guests. On the second level, there will be a catering kitchen to serve the events held in the banquet hall on that floor. The resort-style pool and deck are also located on the second level. The guest rooms and suites are located on the third and fourth floors. An outdoor living room and lounge areas on the third and fourth floors will allow guests to relax and socialize. A rooftop garden will be used to grow organic vegetables for the restaurant and market hall.

Granada Hotel’s owner, Frank Léal of Leal Vineyards in Hollister, recently renovated the neighboring Granada Theater. Léal is also the owner of Sycamore Creek Vineyards and Willow Heights Mansion, both in Morgan Hill, which are all popular wedding destinations and event facilities.

“The full-service hotel will be a beautiful venue for ‘destination weddings’ and events with amenities that appeal to sophisticated tastes,” Martino said. “There are many indoor and outdoor flex spaces that can accommodate small to large parties including a turf lawn on the ground floor. The restaurant offers a private dining area with a glass wall that views the glass flower coolers. In addition, there is a glass walk-in wine cooler with views from the main space and private dining area.”

The groundbreaking comes on the heels of the internationally-renowned firm receiving recognition last month at the Building Industry Association of the Bay Area’s 2019 Excellence in Home Building Awards. The awards honor the firm’s outstanding residential architecture in single-family and multifamily development.
