What are the possibilities when an architect and her husband embark on designing and self- building an A-frame in a remote area within a highly sensitive ecosystem?

This seminar will capture the story of a couple who strove for ~80% self-build using the Pretty Good House framework. You’ll witness the challenges, stressors, and results of this build as they aimed high for a self-reliant, energy-efficient design that would endure extreme climate swings, offer wildfire prevention, and achieve safe indoor air quality—all while building within a limited budget.

Learning Objectives

  1. Learn from the presenters’ first-hand experience evaluating and selecting green building rating systems to use as a framework for shared project goals.
  2. Explore how to design for resiliency and abundance, even with tight budgets and limited construction abilities.
  3. Examine how a small project can sit lightly in a delicate ecosystem and witness how using a particular framework can change the behavior of end users.
  4. Review options for envelope design and detailing in a quickly changing climate and examine material selection for a lower carbon footprint and good indoor air quality in a tight envelope.
