Center city’s newest high-rise building is complete, with leasing underway now at The Ellis in First Ward, according to CharlotteFive.

As CBJ reported when the project broke ground back in 2019, that residential development is notable for its location on the northern end of uptown, which has lagged behind the southern end’s rise in recent years. It’s on North College Street, between Eighth and Ninth streets.

The complex includes two buildings — the 33-story high rise and a six-story midrise — with nearly 550 apartments in total and ground-floor retail space along the Lynx Blue Line. Community amenities include a rooftop pool, lounges and club room, fitness centers, private work pods, courtyards and an outdoor kitchen.

According to its website, rents at The Ellis start at about $1,250 per month for a 533-square-foot studio apartment and could run higher than $9,000 for a nearly 2,800-square-foot penthouse with three bedrooms.

The development was led by LMC, the multifamily division of Lennar Corp. (NYSE: LEN). C5’s reporter talked with an executive of Hoar Construction, a partner on the project, about the challenges of working on a tight, roughly 3.5-acre site — and during a pandemic.
