An 175-unit apartment building will soon sit on the parking lot at the corner of East and Washington streets next to the former Harrison College building.

Milhaus, which also developed the Artistry building immediately to the west, also now owns the former college building, and is seeking a tenant for that building.

The new five-level building – to be known as The Grid – will include a 180-space parking garage and an enclosed outdoor courtyard with kitchen and lounge areas.

The site has been cleared, with construction scheduled to begin this summer. First occupancy should come in the fall of 2020.

Brad Vogelsmeier, Milhaus director of development, said the Grid project will feature both contemporary and industrial elements, with an emphasis on glass and metal across the façade.

The Grid project will feature one- and two-bedroom units, as well as “microunits” – 323-square-foot units with built-in furniture. The new building will also include a resident-only co-working space, a coffee bar, a fitness studio, secure cold-food and delivery storage, and an outdoor “public art component” to be curated by the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art.

The existing 50,000-square-foot building has been empty since the college closed last year. Office tenants there will share the Grid’s parking garage with apartment residents.
