Directly connected to the Los Angeles Metro Rail system, 3100 Fig delivers the perfect transit-oriented community to the students of the University of Southern California (USC). Being one of several student housing developments adjacent to the campus, 3100 Fig challenged KTGY’s architects to design a community with a unique identity that was still complementary to USC’s architecture and the surrounding area. Choosing to adapt the climate responsive characteristics found on campus, the architects utilized ground level arcades and crisp, modern arches that create depth across the façade. The functionality of these arches — inspired by USC’s architectural transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces — provide students with a shaded place to pause, connect and gather on the way to or back from campus. This “front porch” inspired area is complemented by a “back yard” that includes gardens, a pickle ball court and a dog park in addition to the other student-oriented features such as study rooms, a rooftop deck, pool, fitness center and bike amenities. By creating a design that responds to its location, market trends and resident needs, KTGY’s architects and designers delivered a vibrant student housing community.
