Story

Located in San Jose’s Japantown, the design for this mixed-use development is influenced by contemporary Japanese architecture with: vertical glazing systems, material choices, and a contrast between solid masses and transparent masses. The layout of the building responds to the shape of the site. A triangular plaza carved out of the front of the building has a Japanese-inspired landscape with a large focal tree in the middle. KTGY chose to reinforce the triangle shape of the site by using some of the angles from the plan in the design of the elevation, with angular walls and parapets. A palette of concrete, glazing, dark wood siding, warm wood siding and stucco was chosen to reinforce the contemporary Japanese theme. Parking incorporates mechanical parking lifts to save space while meeting the parking requirement along with the other varied requirements of the program and site, which includes a mix of lower density residential, high density residential and commercial space.
