Story

Lydia House, as it is currently functioning, houses both of the Long Beach Rescue Mission’s programs for helping women transition out of homelessness: a 90-day program intended to address immediate needs and a one-year, intensive program. The Lighthouse is designated for those in the one-year program and serves as motivation, encouraging others to commit to the more intensive program. The main façade of the expansion (along Pacific Avenue) is designed to be a beacon of light along the street, while maintaining a sense of privacy and security for the residents. Composite material creates angled vertical elements with LED light shining through the slats. The first floor of the building is mainly designated for shared program space, including a multi-purpose room, living room, playroom, and staff offices. One bedroom, at the ground floor, provides four accessible beds. The second and third levels provide 20 beds each, with shared restroom facilities. By creating a 3-story building, 44 additional beds of transitional housing are provided in addition to the necessary program space, while still maintaining a scale suitable to the neighboring context.
