Presented with the opportunity to design a ground-up hotel in downtown Austin, KTGY focused on evoking a sense of Austin’s eccentricity and creating a seamless experience from exterior to interior. Inspired by the hipster artisan scene, the music culture, as well as the many geographic influences of nature, designers began by layering in readily available materials indigenous to Austin such as Texas limestone, stained white oak wood, chiseled stone, and textures which create a natural habitat feeling. The color palette is a strong reflection of the landscape of Austin and an urban understanding of the city’s natural resources. Soothing shades of taupe, cream and white punctuated by ochre, purples and blues – all aspects of nature are incorporated.

The lobby at the JW Marriott Austin boasts a terrazzo floor poured in an organic pattern reflective of Austin’s topography. This pattern is mirrored in a ceiling made of painted, carved-chipboard. Floor to ceiling stretches of metal screens reminiscent of macramé wall hangings are strategically positioned to create intimate seating groups. Art installations include an oversized fireplace,a lobby focal point which “houses” a copper sculpture interpretation of Austin’s well-known flight-of-bats. Behind the front desk, a recreation of the skin of the cactus comes to life through a process of digital imagery, layers of glass and back lighting. Furniture pieces air on the contemporary side to reflect the city’s modernity but are complimented by a mix of styles to celebrate the eclectic nature and vibe of Austin.

In the guestrooms, a serene color palette and overall clean lines are punctuated by architectural details to provide a respite from the high-energy city.
