Tasked with reimagining an existing brand and working within the constraints of maintaining the current building facade, the architectural and interior design team at KTGY worked hand in hand to conceptualize an elegant and lively eatery inspired by the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. Upon entering the re-designed interior spaces patrons are transported to Mexico City. Knowing that it is customary to celebrate this holiday throughout the night, the designers selected a dark color palette illuminated by fixtures that emit a warm glow resembling that of the candles traditionally used for ofrendas. A myriad of flowers — much like the ones that decorate the sugar skulls this restaurant is named after — float above the lighting, adding a level of depth and a sense of wonder for guests. Strong arches and rich adobe and wood tones are utilized throughout this space and are accented by vibrant patterns, tiles and greenery that mimic the lively atmosphere and architecture of Mexico City. Located in a young, hip locality adjacent to a convention center, Kalaveras pulls in an audience by using modern flair to pay homage to old traditions.
