In Lone Tree, Colorado, our retail designers were challenged to articulate a large retail site for the Living Spaces home goods company. The two-story building is built on an undeveloped plot of land between a one-story retail building and a four-story hotel, our building bridges the massing gap between these neighbors. Terracing enhanced by stonework creates tranquil outdoor space with views to the gently sloping landscapes around the site. Designed to fill a physical gap as well as a market niche, this design team brings a large retail footprint down to the human scale with a dynamic facade and varied rooflines.
The building has a contemporary and asymmetrical look. Its colors and materiality provide a palette that is respectful of the site while maintaining a distinct Living Spaces identity. The outdoor patio and upper-level balcony are placed on the northwest corner to make a welcoming gesture, where glass and wood veneers warm the atmosphere and create a visual connection for the arriving guests. Long stretches of articulated windows allow for natural light and increased permeability. Massing variations, material and color changes work with the windows to compartmentalize the building, reflecting its interior spaces and addressing the scale of the building to the pedestrian.
