The 87, a luxurious set of apartments and townhomes, sits on the block adjacent to Indiana University South Bend surrounded by local eateries and plenty of retail — the perfect location for undergraduate and graduate students. The contemporary architectural style pulls various elements and inspiration from the UI South Bend campus allowing The 87 to be familiar to students yet distinct from campus living. Prominent design features, such as vertically oriented windows and brick piers framed with faux wood, strategically accentuate each building’s primary entry. Creating a focal point around a grand entrance allowed the architects to maintain the budget by limiting extravagant design features across the façade yet still providing visual interest. The largest of the five buildings wraps the parking garage and houses a majority of the amenities, a fitness center, computer lab, clubroom, media room, outdoor lounge, sports court, convenience station, as well as study and meeting rooms. The remainder of the buildings mainly focus on residences, some of which include two- and three-story townhomes. As a higher density development, The 87 offers students a fresh community with more living arrangements and amenities than the aging, lower density student housing options that currently surround the university.
