Sitting at the end of the main-entry drive of the transit oriented Shady Grove community in Rockville, MD, Building B embraces the roundabout with a delicate prominence. An angular tower element creates visual interest dividing the building into two wings. Additionally, it serves to delineate the ground floor residential amenities from the public library and creates a “stage” that welcomes guests to linger. These key activation elements are reflective of the community’s focus on active mobility, encouraging pedestrian movement throughout the site.

The baroque inspired facade establishes a historic town square aesthetic which is supported by the prominent use of brick and modernized with double height glazing and metal accents. The parking garage and integration of a linear park on the rear side of the building create a buffer between the residential units and the commuter rail lines that transport residents from the community into the city. Designers took care to integrate a higher level of acoustic mitigation on south facing façade, further shielding residents from the potential noise created by the commuter rail. From a large courtyard hosting a pool and lounge space to quiet work from home enclaves both young commuters and families alike find themselves drawn to the amenities and connectivity of Building B.
