KTGY, a full-service architecture, branding, interior and planning firm focused on residential, retail, hospitality and mixed-use developments, announced the grand opening of College Ridge at Skyline College, a mixed-use apartment community located on the San Francisco Bay Area Peninsula in San Bruno.

In partnership with the San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD), SummerHill Homes (site development) and D.R. Horton (adjacent single-family homes), KTGY designed the community with Skyline College faculty and staff in mind. “In the Bay Area and beyond, the need for affordable housing has become essential,” says KTGY executive director David Burton in a statement. “We are proud to offer thoughtfully designed, eco-conscious homes to the faculty and staff who need them most.”

Adjacent to the campus, the six-acre development includes two buildings, each with 15 affordable units reserved for college district faculty and staff, with one-, two, and three-bedroom units ranging from 796 to 1,385 square feet. The variety of bedroom count was intentional to allow workforce housing opportunities for households of varying sizer and family structure. Each unit includes a spacious kitchen and great room, private outdoor space, ample access to natural light, dedicated covered parking and secure bicycle storage to encourage eco-conscious transportation options. Eight residences are located on the ground floor allowing for fully accessible living needs. Both buildings are connected to two landscaped outdoor areas, including a resident barbeque pit and concrete ping-pong table.

College Ridge at Skyline College is currently designed to LEED Silver certification standards. Sustainable design principles include site sensitive infill development, use of advanced EnergyStar appliances, low-emitting products, on-site electric car charging stations, native and drought- tolerant landscaping, and the installation of a high-performance thermal enclosure.

The community also includes 40 single-family market-rate homes, also designed and developed by KTGY. The lightly terraced homes mix traditional Spanish & American architectural design elements and details from adjacent residential neighborhoods. While the homes serve to tie the overall development into the surrounding residential community, they also provided the catalyst for the public/private partnership that allowed for the workforce housing to occur.

“For nearly 20 years, our college district has led the way in educational workforce housing,” said Michael Claire, Chancellor, San Mateo County Community College District. “To add more units of housing, means we are able to provide opportunities to our faculty and staff to affordably live in the community they work and support a community that supports them.”

This marks the 30th affordable housing development that KTGY has spearheaded in the Bay Area.
