Today, the firm celebrates the distinguished career of David Obitz as he passes the torch to principal and studio leader, Alan Scales.

KTGY, an award-winning design firm focused on architecture, interior design, branded environments and urban design, announced today that David Obitz will retire from his role as principal on July 31, 2024, after 21 years with the firm. Over his dynamic 35-year career, David has delivered designs that have garnered over 100 industry awards. He has partnered with clients on a wide range of projects, from mixed-use to single family, luxury to affordable, and senior to student housing across the nation.

During his tenure with KTGY, David has been instrumental in growing the firm’s next generation of leaders. Building on the mentorship and guidance he received from KTGY founder Hiro Kinoshita and fellow leaders Jill Williams, Bryan Sevy, Stan Braden and Takashi Hoshina, David has been committed to continuing the firm’s legacy of generation-to-generation growth.

“When I started at KTGY as a new graduate, David Obitz was the first person to identify my potential. He launched my career as a design leader and I will always be thankful for his mentorship and support,” said Ben Kasdan, principal.

For over a decade, David has worked alongside KTGY Principals Alan Scales and Chris Texter. Together, they have successfully grown the Irvine residential studio, which focuses on for-sale housing. Their work has deepened client relationships and brought innovative design to all people and places.

“David’s creative thinking, spatial design acumen and commitment to collaborative partnerships have been invaluable in broadening KTGY’s reach,” said KTGY Board Member and Managing Principal Chris Texter. “As a leader, David created an office culture that fostered innovation and mentored future leaders, enabling the studio to position itself for this moment.”

Starting August 1, leadership of the studio will transition to Principal Alan Scales. Scales has been with the firm for 23 years. Along with his dedicated team, Alan is steadfast in his commitment to continuing David’s legacy of collaborating with clients to realize their vision through a dedication to partnership, design excellence and attention to detail.
