Blackwood Groves is one of the Mountain West’s premier planned communities. Tucked against the Bridger Range in scenic Bozeman, Montana, KTGY provided architecture, planning and urban design services for much of the 12-acre mixed use site. The Cottages feature some of our most exquisite design in the build-to-rent market, a specialty for this design team. These are a collection of standalone homes designed to embrace community and outdoor living with a careful application of the cottage court model. Although each cottage receives dedicated, covered parking, the role of the car is de-emphasized, and primary home entries orient toward lawns, parklets, greenbelts and paseos.
The effect of this orientation is an irresistibly cozy neighborhood, supported by equally irresistible architecture. No two homes in any court are exactly alike, with one-, two- and three-bedroom units nestled in with each other for heterogeneity. Organic materials tie them together, and each has a traditional but varied and lively stylistic influence. Board and batten siding, steeply pitched roofs and gabled dormers underlie the cottage appeal. Each cottage is oriented to a green space, and each floorplan orients its main living area to a private covered porch and public green, creating degrees of permeability between the privacy of the home and the immediacy of the community. Additive layers of design make The Cottages a special place to live, with every element from planning to design to materials, in its right place.
